I would steer well clear of both 2.8(RD28) and 3.0(ZD30) diesels. The RD28's are gutless and have a habbit of cracking heads, whilst the ZD30's have more issues than ive got time to write, the most common of which is melting pistons. You should have no probs running 1.0mm gap with that setup. Many late model vehicles run upto 1.5mm gap from factory. Your coil should definantly have enough snot for 1.0mm.

Is your engine running hotter than normal during high load/low speed situations or whilst sitting in traffic? If so, yes your viscous fan is possibly the problem. You should hear it start to roar and pull air when engine temp is getting up. Had same prob with my 89 mav td42, and many other vehicles ...

check your supply hose from filter to pump, if hose is perished or clamps not tight enough the pump will suck air past the ends of the hose rather than pull fuel through the filter. have struck this several times before, gives hissing noise when pumping primer due to poor sealing on hose fittings.
