i get around 10L / 100km, and whoever says you can be light on the throttle on a 2.8 is a jackASS Not a jackass, just a very patient person  I get around 10.5-12.5 L/100km. Typically in the 11-11.5 range when I've corrected kms for tyre size compared to stock tyres. I'm running 32x11.5 Maxxis ...

Air filter quality and sooty oil seem to have a huge effect on fuel economy with these engines. I end up changing my air filter at around 10,000km cos it clogs up so fast over here. If you have manual hubs are you driving around with them locked or unlocked? I find i get a bit better mileage with ...

I used to run 90/100w globes without a loom using my stock Hilux wiring figuring that since the lights run off a relay already and the fuses were rated enuf for 100w lites why wouldn't it be a problem even if the stock wires looked suspiciously small gauge? After about 18 months of them being in my ...

Boots from Downey Offroad seem to work ok. Hilux boots are the same as US market 86-95 Pickups. They're about halfway down http://www.downeyoff-road.com/ChassisComponents/MiscDriveTrain.html They're EMP brand are a fairly soft rubber and have a strange smell. After being installed a year I can still ...

3L Fuel Economy Observations and Questions
I just had my Hilux serviced and noticed somthing interesting with the fuel economy. I'd thought my fuel and air filters would have been changed as they were at 10,000km each and the fuel economy had gone to crap but they weren't and the only thing changed was the engine oil. That being said my fuel ...

I also heard the new ones flood inside when water is over the sills. What's your driving style like? I used to get around 420kms per 58L fillup (of a 66L tank) in my 03 2.8 non-turbo Hilux. It's all city driving over here with frequent stops and starts. I recently adjusted my driving style to a lot slower acceleration and shift at 2000rpm and now I'm getting about ...

I'd go the new one. If the 05 old shape one is non-turbo (ie not an SR5) and was sold new from Nassco it's going to be a 2.8 like mine and that is slow as fark compared to the new 05 2.5 turbo ones. Mine also drinks diesel like there's no tomorrow. There's a lot more mods out there for the old shape ...

I've got 1" ball joint spacers in an attempt to increase the front travel a bit. I had to install shims under the down travel bump stop to limit the down travel after doing this as the inner CV would bind at full droop. Did you use spacers to space the diff down too? Nope. If I spaced the diff down ...

Disconnecting the front sway bar makes for a more comfortable ride on road. It's definitely a lot better without it offroad. I don't carry any loads with mine so I'm not sure how it would handle with weight in the back and no sway bar. If you go this route try to avoid making any sudden manoevours ...

Online retailer of right hand drive replacement headlights
I currently have a set of "christal" replacement headlights in my 03 Hilux (my model has the old style 200mm rectangular lights) and I'm absolutely sick of the shadows caused by this type of light and the lack of light thrown to the sides. Can anyone provide the part numbers and an online retailer ...

Just a word of caution about auto lockers. They'll be fine for driving on the road with you at the wheel but if you lend your rig to anyone make sure they understand there's an auto locker in the back and what that means when it comes to handling. Biggest I've seen is 35" Boggers on an 03 SR5 with 2.5" Body lift, 2" OME 1" BJ spacers, torsion bar crank and some guard work. Doesn't have much suspension travel tho. Electric fan on 3L Hilux
Has anyone tried running an electric radiator fan on a 3L equipped Hilux to try and improve the performance?
Any fuel economy or power improvement?
Did it overheat?
Worth the effort of replacing the mechanical fan?

With the lights mounted under the light bar it might cause the roof to cave in more right over the driver's and front passenger's heads in a roll over because instead of shearing off like they would if they were mounted on top the light bar they will probably be forced into the roof by the light bar.

Just to add my 2 c, Bee-jay are your transmission mounts in one piece? Are the harmonic balancers in good condition on the engine?
