There's a product called 'Dakota Digital DSL-1' which will plug into some alternators (4 and 8 cylinders) and give a pulse signal suitable for a tacho (and I guess shift light). But it seems you already have the signal if your VDO is electronic.

I doubt you'll be able to get anything 'off the shelf ...

You should head out and watch the comps. I cant say that there is a stage where rev limiter is not hit. :D

That bit? That is indeed the air filter. I'm not quite sure how it goes bang - it's just a paper filter.

I have the same problem after having an LPG kit installed. Disconnecting the batter (for about 3 hours) didn't fix it, but I hear it has worked for some people.

I think the only big downer about the 4.8 is the way they drink the fuel...
As far as I know that's the only major downside. I don't know of any 'mass' issues those engines have (there'll be lemons in any model if you're unlucky enough to get one).

No problems with the 4.5 on the beach. Cheaper to run than a diesel (if you plan on servicing it) and even cheaper again on LPG (I pay $13/100km + $200 twice a year for servicing). Plenty of power to turn big ...

Not quite sure what you mean by killing them. Do you mean flattening the batteries or destroying them from overcharging?

The tacho in my HiLux (1991, LN106R) used to jump around erratically, then eventually stopped working all together.
