Gday, You basicaly have a few options, Inverter welders are a quater of the size and quater of the weight but 4 times the price so it depends on your budget. If your not going for an inverter , get the heaviest one you can find within reason. Known brands are generally better, like, BOC, CIG, WIA ...

I started of with a 30yr old arc welder, some rods and some 6mm sheet steel and basically just did bead after bead over the sheet. After a while you get a feel for it and your beads will be more uniform and stronger. Its also a good idea to buy a book on welding, it can tell more about settings ...

I like to carry a cd with the noise of air lockers being disingauged on it,this makes you look reel cool when out the bush,also have a sweet turbo spooling up sound as well,wanted to put a pop of valve noise on there but didnt want to look like a wanker.This cd has saved me around 6000 dollars. :D

I reckon its over fuelling,mine was doing the same thing,exhaust temp would shoot up around 680 degrese on a hill in top gear,also in the soft sand,but it never blew any visable smoke.
