:roll: I found to put the clip back on I put it at the end of the shaft the held it in place with a washer of the shockies and a bolt then levered it in to place with a couple of small screwdrivers, the clip is captive and can'twander off into a dark corner.

a friend of mines 80 series recently seized and was told by the mechanic that the diaphram in the oil pick up gets clogged up and caused his dillema could be your problem.
this is the first i've heard of it but his mechanic says this is quite common in 80s
