I've welded front diff on my 60.
Steering is a little harder. Only really tested it out on the beach so far though. Its great in the sand.

ended up buying a diff (front diff - in good order) of a mechanic (mate of a mate) for $150.
He reckons its in good order.
From what has been said its obvious that you have to know what you are doing to set your diff up.
Its not just a matter of taking apart and putting back together.

pinion bearings have collapsed they tell me.

$1200 for reconditioned diff.

suppose i'll have to look at replacing pinion bearings.

My 60 has developed a noise which sounds like its coming from the diff (?)

Rattely vibration occurs under engine braking in the lower gears. Although I have noticed it in 5th on the odd occasion.

Now, as far as I can tell its coming from the diff....

Would this mean my diff is R/S???

i'm interested in supercharging my 60 but worried that a supercharger would make it heavier on the juice(?) compared to turbo (?)

I need advice now regards this exhaust manifold.

It seem i have these options:

1. Weld on a plate to existing manifold outlet (cast iron doesn't weld well - not such a good idea)

2. Fabricate an adapter plate which can be bolted to manifold and turbo. (probably best idea (?)

3. Buy a turbo kit ...

I'd go with the T28 but as a roller GT28, there are a couple of models, the only hassle is that you have to re-stud pattern the exhaust manifold as they are all designed around T3 turbo flanges. The biggest GT28Rs is rated to 440 HP and I have fitted them to 1HZ and TD42 and they work fantastic as ...

Considering Turboing my 2H.

I have read in a thread that turbos out of a 300ZX are good.

They use two T28's which were also used on the 2.8litre Nissan Patrol Turbo Diesel.

Would these be a little small for the 2H (?)

Have a fairly unmodified HJ60 2H running 31's, I do try and shanghai(!) it up hills at full noise and stuff like that occasionally. it doesn't get an easy life.
I pulled the cv's out to hae a look at them - they look to be in perfect ...

is the same gear oil used for transfer and gearbox?

I've had a wide fuel consumption range...

Travelling up beach at high tide in soft sand flat out in 3rd low range 15l/100kms

On highway doing 110kph 11l/100kms

One thing i'm still trying to figure out... I know that wind drag etc means that say (depending on your vehicle) better economy can be ...

where should the oil pressure guage sit on a 2h? mine sits at 75% at full noise, drops to 30% at idle

Have Downloaded Birfield.com manuals for 60 series - They have a comprehensive gearbox section, but no mention of where to fill and quantity of oil needed etc...
Same applies to transfer case.

I was sort of looking for a bung like what you would find on a diff ...

all this is quite intersting... when mine goes i shall buy a secondhand one for $1000 - $2000 methinks...

The 1HZ engine is still used in the 78/79 series. Producing 121 kw with a turbo (no intercooler)

The 1 HD FTE engine is used in the 100 series. it has 151 kw, intercooled & has EFI

but it might give me the *)(*)( less than a welded rear diff(???) that i have presently
(I run single drive on the bitumen) pain in the arse doing the changeover.

Are Front And Rear Diff Centers The Same In HJ60's???
