Part of the reason tie rods bend is the force exerted on them as one tire tries to turn in (because of a rock pushing on it) while the other stays straight. You don't need to bash the rod on a rock to bend it. Try pushing straight in on both ends of a straw with your fingers. It will bow. btw ...
