More than likely it's the glow plug timer gone kaput. You could chase around for another and it will likely fail (just like mine did). Easy fix if this is the problem. A mate went through the same thing on a paj. It ended up being in the exhaust, the seal that joins the header to the main exhaust. Apparently it is a common thing and sound just like tappet noise.

I can vouch for the strength of them, I hit a decent size roo at a tad over 80'ks and one of the lights took the full impact from the head. All it did was shatter the globe. The rest of the bull bar was a write off, snapped in two places.

My 60 had a similar noise when on intermittent. Took out that little box, cleaned and wd40'd it. works fine now and no noise. Hope this helps.
