so my speedo stopped working just in time for my rego inspection, I tracked down the problem and the speedo cable has broken. Mr repco man says he cant find one and go genuine. Has anyone found a good source for a speedo cable? I just find it really hard to hand over the bucks for genuine parts ...

my sierra always leaked from the drain hoses that run back the heater box to the firewall. they always uses to pop off, and even when they were on they would leak. some hoses clamps fixed it up fine.

go for the rebuild, as said earlier you know whats going in. and you'll have a virtually new engine as opposed to possibly a half cooked one.

after looking into costs of engine conversion i think i'll stick with fixing original motor. is there any good way of checking blocks/pistons/head/head gasket for cracks or is this a job for the engine shop? i had a really good look but i know they may be too small to see.

thanks heaps for the replies.

i sent the head to get pressure tested but spoke to a mechanic and was told that oil in radiator would normally indicate a cracked block...

so a new engine will be in order me thinks. seriously considering the gti conversion, would be a good opportunity to do it!
