In the nissan manual it recomends a 75w/80 APLI GL-4 oil for the transfer case.

Ryan,
It does sound like it is an earthing problem, like yourself i'm not sure where the dash earth is located. Should be only one earth wire for the whole instrument cluster, also check the instrument cluster fuse and the wiring either side of this fuse. Sorry i cant be of any more help.

G'day Ryan, Do the other gauges ( tacho, speedo and fuel ) still function properly? Do the dash lights still work properly? Only asking because if the rest of the dash works then it may be as simple as a dirty or broken connection where the engine harness joins back into the nissan wiring. cheers ...
