Re: Horrable steering wobble GQ

I have had this twice and it was the Panhard Rod bushes both times. Use only GENUINE bushes and they will last for yonks. My experience showed that non-genuine (non rubber) bushes didn't last long (2 years). The original bushes lasted for 18 years. So 60 bucks and 60 minutes work MAY be all you need ...

I have a SWB GQ Auto (petrol only) which I have owned since new (Jan 89) and which is now on its second engine. Around Sydney suburbs I get 22lit /100K and on the open road about 18lit/100K. All seems normal to me.

Replace the radiator cap every 12 months with a genuine one. how does this help? not doubting it but i havent heard anything about this method. cheers. The GQ overflow recovery system pumps coolant into the overflow tank as the engine is hot and if the radiator cap is faulty it will NOT suck it ...

If it's a GQ, then replace the Panhard Rod bushes. I had a similar problem which developed after a trip out west. New panhard Rod bushes fixed it and have had no problem for the past 12 months. Cost about 60 bucks and an hours work but you will need some kind of a press to change the bushes. Let us ...

I had violent wobbles through the steering wheel 12 months ago and it turned out that my Panhard Rod bushes were cactus. Changed them and no more wobbles. Sixty bucks and an hours work.

My GQ developed a severe front end vibration between 60-70 k's which would almost rip the steering wheel out of my hands. Changed the Panhard Rod bushes and problem was fixed. One hours work and $60.00 fixed it and its been OK for nearly 12 months. You will need some kind of press to remove and ...

I fitted an Autotecnica sports steering wheel to my 89 GQ SWB about 8 years ago after the original started to fall apart. It's much smaller in diameter. still there and I still like it. The Boss that came with it made install easy and it even has a Nissan logo in the middle. Try Repco, Supercheap or ...

As said before, change your Panhard rod bushes, 60 bucks and an hours work. Worked for me when I had that problem.

I agree with Munga. Based on your symptoms you MAY have the same problem that I had recently. With mine the wobble became so violent it was hard to hold onto the steering wheel. 60 bucks worth of Panhard Rod bushes and an hours work fixed it. Been OK now for 3 months. Check your Panhard Rod bushes ...

When timing GQ TB42, vacuum on, or vacuum off

My Gregorys manual says when setting the timing on my GQ (points system) that I should leave the vacuum hose connected to the advance unit on the distributor. This is normally what I do and move the distributor while the engine is running while checking with the timing light. When it's right I lock ...

Should I retension the head first?

I plan to check/adjust the tappets on my 89GQ SWB over the coming long weekend and was wondering whether I should retension the head studs before I do the tappets. The engine is a GEM reconditioned unit that has done about 40,000ks since install 2 years ago. Appreciate any sensible advice. Onyas ...

Recently had severe front-end shakes on my 89 SWB patrol. So severe it felt like the front-end was about to rip out and the steering wheel was hard to hang onto. I have owned the vehicle since new and never before experienced anything like it. It always occured around 50-70kph and would happen every ...
