Kia Sorento- engine woes

G'day all,
A mate of mine has had some dramas with his Oct 2003 build Kia sorento. It has the 3.5L v6 engine in it. Apparently the other day he pulled up at his kids day care centre and was reversing into a car spot when the motor started knocking. He shut it down straight away and restarted it some ...

As others have said, do your research. Don't just trust what one installer tells you. There is a difference with the quality and noise of various products. From speaking with different people, I am under the impression the Landi injectors can become quite noisy (sounding like noisy tappets). Every ...

Mine is an update model with the O2.
If it is still running an O2 sensor, then it is still running the earlier closed loop injection system, which explains why you are having no issues with your SVI.

Am I missing something here ? What is preventing you using an O2 sensor ?

It is the programming in the factory computer that prevents you from using an O2 sensor. Pre 95 model 1FZFE's computers ran a closed loop system. You have an O2 sensor in your exhaust. Post 95 model computers run an open ...

Yes, there are a lot of things you can do to tweak the map. In an open loop system, you can dyno tune it without issues, and having the factory ECU basically stay out of it, you can have some fun running different map settings for performance and economy.

As for keeping the same economy as on ...

how much more are they to run?

cause an auto would be nice for a change :)

from my experience, around town, you would be looking at between 4-6L per 100km worse off than the manual, but on the highway, you can get about 1-2L/100km better than the manual.

At 110km, the auto sits at about 2200rpm ...

I loved my old 2h turbo. It was a weapon.

I had a Denco turbo kit, then i custom fitted a front mount intercooler. Used to run 13psi boost. Never had any dramas.

I used to keep it well serviced though. Tuned it with a pyro to get fuelling spot on.

Sure a 12ht is a good motor, but the 2h isn't ...

It sounds like you have tried all the usual culprits.

The reality is, it just sounds like your fuelling is slightly on the rich side.

Rich in diesel = heat. When you turbo a 2H, you have to adjust the pump to run more fuel in order to get more power from the extra air. I would think you are ...

In the diesel, there is no transfer pump to the main tank.

When the sub fuel tank is selected in the diesel, it merely switches a solenoid that changes the fuel pickup to the sub tank, and the motor takes the fuel straight from the sub.

In the petrol 80 however, there is a transfer pump that ...

2 inch lift, you can get away with factory castor. If you have 3 inch lift, then it will start to become noticable floaty and wander on the road, with that feeling of driving on train tracks. For a 3 inch lift, fitting 2 degree castor bushes should fix that problem.

From experience and talking to suspension professionals, it is my understanding that castor plates which are usually around 5degree are too much for a 4 inch lift. Generally, a 4 inch lift only requires 3 degree bushes, not 5 degree plates. They are good for around a 6 inch lift. Because you have ...

If its not leaking it out, its gotta be burning it. No where else for it to go.

My guess would be possibly cracked ring, or slightly melted piston from too high EGT's.

First thing to do would be to compression test it.

i would probably pull the glow plugs out and drop a couple of drops of oil down each of the cylinders before trying to turn it over. A couple of drops= a couple of drops. Oil pressure should be significantly lower at idle.

On the factory guage, idle oil pressure should be somewhere between the bottom of the guage and 1/3. Under throttle, anywhere between 1/3 and 3/4 is the norm. If you have the original owners handbook, it explains this in there.

It is not abnormal ...
