Dad asked one of the toyota spare partsguys about this, and he said the only real reason is because dot4 hadnt been certified for use in them by toyota. Its pretty simple, just use the fluid specified on the lid of the brake fluid reservoir, this will be whats required for the clutch circuit also, most tojos clutch reservoir lids have the same advisory on them too.

The problem is, when I start the engine, all is fine. It will initially rev around 1200rpm, then gradually settle. Usually, it would settle to 800rpm and stay there. Now it will drop to around 400, almost stall, then catch itself, rev up to about 1000rpm, then drop to 400etc.

Yep got the same prob here too, to the point that it has hardened and cracked and peeled away around the windscreen and created a buzzing sound at 105kmh+, was really annoying, i had to pull over and peel off the loose excess that caused the noise, no irritating buzzing now!

Good to hear, perhaps the torque settings for the previous gaskets were to strong then if the rings were 'split', or the gaskets were just shite

Mate if youve had fire ring destruction on your previous gaskets, then you may have a timing issue, causing detonation, may even be caused by excessive carbon build in the combustion chambers/tops o pistons, or burnt valves, better look into that huh
