I can get around 10L/100 on the highway in my 01 XJ (stock 'cept for a 2" lift). Round town it's 15ish if you're 'normal', 17+ if you sink the boot in regularly and use the 4.0L and the light weight to beat traffic ;) Overheating is an issue but you just need to pay more attention to the cooling ...

The comment about torsion strength reminds me ... People often claim the Freeo suffers the same problem. I have had mine lifting wheels and no rub marks in the doors etc. http://www.4wdevents.com/gallery/d/847-1/2005_0102_103551AA_resized.jpg They are moderately capable offroad. Biggest drama is ...

Welllll ... as an owner of a Freelander .... Pre-01 I wouldn't touch if it was a Petrol. The 1.8 is just too small and has headgasket issues. The early diesels are not bad however, but I've never driven or owned one. After 01 the 1.8 and the old diesel were not sold here anymore - you can only get ...

My comments are on XJs ... Relability - Not bad. Lots of parts and advice on the net available if there are issues. Fuel consumption - Bad. I average 15l/100kms in my 01 XJ Auto around town. On the highway it is better. Beach - Very good. On sand the engine just has so much power it makes mincemeat ...

Removing 2dr Seat Bases
Any ideas on how to get the seat bases out of my 2dr (so I can clean up the interior properly)? I've heaved on it with my spanners but geez they are tight!
Is an impact wrench the answer ? (Any excuse will do to get one I s'pose ... already have a compressor )

Workshop for minor Rangie stuff?
Can anyone recommend a workshop on the southside (or even a mobile service mob would be great, since my beast isn't registered and thus a PITA to take anywhere) that isn't going to charge like a wounded bull ? It's for my 81 RR. Due to working 100hr weeks and trying to finish renovations on my house ...

The reason I thought it was not working was that I saw a video,, of me in the mud and the back wheel was spinning alot faster than what the front appeared to be. Don't forget the open diffs front and rear. You can lock them front to back, but that doesn't stop a wheel on the axle spinning uselessly.

Viscous centre diff relies on fluid dynamics. You know when you have spoon in a glass of water, and you stir it with another spoon, how the spinning fluid also makes the other spoon spin too? Same principle. You have you input shaft (from the engine trans) and two output shafts, into a metal box ...

Holley Off-Road Carby - anyone got one?
My 81 Rangie has a Holley carb on the 3.5 V8. Everyone tells me these can be problematic on slopes etc. Mine isn't yet on the road so I haven't experienced that yet. However I spied an ad for a Holley Off-Road Carby in the latest 4WD Monthly. Has anyone used one of these? Any comments? Its just ...

Sill tanks - keep or not?
I removed the sill tanks from the RR today (they had been disconnected by the previous owner after 1 of the lines got cut offroading, plus I needed to get access to the seat base retaining bolts, which are hidden by the tanks). I'm now debating whether to refit them or not. To me they look like they ...

Air leak between servo and brake master cylinder
Hi all,
Seems I've got a leak between the servo and the brake master cylinder, which probably accounts for the doughy brake performance of my (unregistered) 81 Rangie. Is there a gasket in there? Or is it just sealed up with goop?

Exhaust place in Brissy - inner city ?
Anyone recommend a reasonably priced exhaust shop in Brissy? My Rangie needs a new system from the extractors back. Preferably inner city or inner southside, so I don't have to transport it too far (not rego'd). I've been quoted $350 for 2.5" pipe with basic muffler from The Muffler Shop in Buranda ...

Trav, I agree. I can put up with minor leaks like these. My old Pulsar leaked too ... it leaked under the cam cover, so I fixed that real good, then it leaked under the dizzy, so I fixed that, then it leaked from somewhere else ... so I just stopped trying to fix it. The only reason I am chasing 'em ...

Correct. Just be carefull because im guessing its going to be like a dam in there and it will have a lot of oil behind that plate. Its a motor or Gearbox/Tcase out job to fix the seal. Again, sounds like fun I'll pull it off and have a look. Engine oil level hasn't moved at all of late so shouldn't ...
