Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
Id say what rockcrawler said sounds very realistic, perhaps some sort of judged points system for car cosmetics could be taken into account, so a straight and tidy car could score/start with more points to begin with than some beat up old shi77a ? i don't think that would be a good system...what ...

Re: GQ TB42 alternator advice??
you can get a ef/el (maybe au, im not 100% on which model) falcon alternator to fit with a little bit of effort...they are 100-110A from memory...cheap and easily available.

Re: GQ TD42 alternator question?
if it is charging higher than it should be it will no doubt be a stuffed reg.
i'm not familiar with the td42 alternators, so i can't comment on ease of fixing...but i would assume it would need to be stripped down and have the reg replaced at a minimum...

Re: GQ TD42 alternator question?
it's a little high...
optimal charge range is something like 13.8v-14.3v (someone might correct this, it's late and my brain is a little fuzzy).
if the charge rate goes too high you will end up boiling the battery and you will get all sorts of nasty fumes happening.

Re: Alternative Alternator
i had the auto elec at work rebuild my alternator and delta wound it...it means that at idle revs i dont get full charge (i get just over 12v at idle, some cars wont even get that much) but as soon as i up the revs i go straight up to a fraction over 14v charging...and under load im puting out 96-97 ...

don't be put off by a 3.0L gq...they are actually a good rig...they need a few more revs than a 4.2L as they have less torque, but they go hard if you push them a little bit...i have no issues turning 35's on or off road...only downside is the carby...they don't like being on steep hills for too ...

petrol patrols, in general, arent exactly economy vehicles. don't be fooled by saying they are gutless...give them a generous serving of rpm and you can be quicker than a 4.2...not to mention a rb30 would have to be one of the easiest motors in the world to turbo, as well as alot of spares available ...

I definately recommend getting 10inch wide rims...regardless of the beads popping off etc, if the tyres are ...
