Mine was also doing this , there are two electric fuel valves between the main and sub tanks that control which tank the diesal is drawn from and returned to. sometimes these valves don't close all tthe way and allow the sub tank to flow into the main tank.It could be some crap stuck in the valve or ...

I have just finished putting a 79 1hd-fte into my 80 series yesterday and after spending way to many days on the wiring I think 7-800 is good value(and would look better too).
