When did winch challenges become so bitchy? All 3 series are awsome and should be welcoming as many people as possible.

While australians seem to be fucking obsessed with electric winches (all the winch challenge boys all seem to think that electric winches are the only way to pull a vehicle  )

You still need engine power so in the case of a rollover recovery would be difficult

If you have the time I say go for it. It's great seeing different ideas, even if they arnt 100% perfect. You might create something awsome. Here's a few pics of my twin motor lowmount, russ did the air freespool and ratios, and me and a couple of mates made the motor adapter.

Re: Modifying an old Thomas winch into a comp winch...

Didn't think of the worm drive, I think they are brass? Probably wouldn't handle the speed of the motors at 24v. The worm drive also acts as the brake, so there must be a way to disconnect the drum

Re: Modifying an old Thomas winch into a comp winch...

A comp spec low mount runs a 26:1 ratio with twin 6hp @24v, some also run triple motors. A good friend of mine has been cutting his own highmount gear sets anywhere from 30:1 to 60:1. He also made a one off set of 18:1 for a gigglepin top hat running 4x 6hps, crazy fast.

Winches this fast do lose ...

No racing for me, but hopefully I make it up to watch. With all those quality racers up there it's sure to be some top notch racing.

Also new mackay venue? So new Saturday night " special stage" ? See if we can get mick drunk enough to get his wallet out again.

Guaranteed those two will be significantly hotter than the rest, so it is a good point to be measuring from.

Any vehicle with performance upgrades will require a roll cage. As long as you follow the rules I think you will be safe. :D. Since no glass Mabey a motorised keg completed with tap, bottle and plastic cups ? And a winch because kegs are heavy.

If it does fail, it will almost definalty weld shut, not melt open. The contacts themselves can carry alot of current, it's when that current is tried to be broken than it arcs, melts the 2 faces of the contact together and cannot be switched off.
