Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi Guys,

I have just returned from a 2,600 km Caravan trip.
We had head winds at some stages, lots of hills and mountain ranges and a few good flat smooth roads.

Most of the time, on good roads, I sat on 100 to 105 kph, pulling the 15' Pop Top Caravan.
Poor roads, 90 to 95kph.

At 2,500 rpm to 2 ...

Pity LR did not fix the error!
On my Discovery, the speedo is always 5 kph out, according to the GPS. 100kph on the speedo is 95 kph, true speed.

Today the tansfer case was exchanged for a one with Defender gears.

There is a big change.
The Disco is no longer a speed machine, it is more like a tractor :)

The torque convertor locks at 75 kph instead of 82.

At 80 kph it is doing 2,000 + RPM.

At 90 it is doing some thing like 2750 rpm.

The speedos are 5 km out, compared to a GPS :D

The only Defender I know of with a 3.9 dico V8 auto, is the one MRAutomotive have.
I have spoken to them about it and there's runs very well ...

The Torque convertor lock is a pain when pulling a caravan!
When it locks in, the revs drop to 1800 and you are in limbo with no power.

I believe the lock is controlled by a valve with a spring.
A Rover transmission guy, told me, altering the preasure on the spring, will changes the speed, but it ...

It's interesting the 3.9 plot above only has 90kw to the ground.
Mine has even less but its not the BHP its the torque and where it is that matters for towing.BHP=torqueXrevs.

I am happy with my 3.9RRC with aThor manifold and self modded heads and unichip and O2 sensors. Gives about 50% more power from 1500 to 2600RPM or so and great economy.

I'm going through a similar exercise at the moment.
I have a 3.9V8 D1 fitted with a "unichip", and although it has much more power than standard, it is still "lacking"!

I have come to the conclusion that the overall gearing is wrong for towing.

I tow a 15' pop top caravan with ours, but ...

l am a bit wary about that. A cousin of mine put in a "good" second hander, and 2 days later she was cooked. lt was inspected before purchase by a auto specialist. Any way, my auto is now half way through being reco'ed, so it's too late now. At least it comes with a 3 year warranty.

the problem i have experienced with my unichip (bought the car with it) is that it can mask faults such as dirty/clogged injectors, leaking intake system (un-metered air) which means the tuner will add fuel on the dyno tune so it doesn't lean out all the time... anyway, get one is my advice

Murray Sanderson was telling me that running on premium fuel is not always a good idea, unless you have had your fuel tank cleaned.

The PULP cleans the tank and the filter is between the tank and the engine.
Therefore the "gunk" gets sucked into the fuel pump ans "she stops".

To answer the question, I have a "Unichip" fitted to a D1 and are very happy with it.

It turned the vehicle from a slug into a powerhouse :lol:
The Unichip fits onto the original ECU and controls the fuel and spark.
