Thanks guys,

the "other thing on the same circuit" was the problem - reverse light also on this circuit and it had the short.

Yup - looks ok, and like I said the flashers work, and it blows before you even try and turn the indicators on so I assume no power to the flasher at that point? Sorry, I suck at wiring!

Yes it does, but given the hazards still work is it still possible this is the problem? Sorry, not much good at wiring but at least it gives me somewhere else to look!
