Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone, I remember someone saying something about a diode or capacitor in the alternator that intermittently slowly drains the battery. Mine does it I'm sure as occasionaly mine will have a flat or nearly flat battery with nothing left on. :? A capacitor or diode cannot ...

I am still in doubt as to the quality of the cells as the modules are around 60% below market price which makes me think they are seconds. The retailer is unable to assure me of the quality let alone who the Chinese manufacturer cell manufacturer is and I can't get any info from him about the solar ...

As an interim I fitted 2 x 150W sealed beam driving lights - kind of look like aircraft landing lights but at 7" diameter. They work as long range as well as pencil beam. Cheap but effective until I can justify Light Force or Roo Lites.

suggy I thought all the controllers job is, is to limit the voltage output of the solar panel so it doesnt overcharge your battery, so on a bright sunny day youre panel doesnt try and shove 18volt or something into the battery. You are quite correct P.J. Most nominal 12V solar panels (a.k.a. PV ...

No you can't, cause which ever one is charging better (most likely the bigger one) will over ride the other and shut it down so you end up with only one panel anyway. You have to use a single controller to controll all the panels together or it won't work properly. I'm afraid you are wrong on this ...

But can I put two sets of panels, with their own individual controllers, onto the same battery ? Basically like asking if I can hook two battery chargers up to the same battery I guess. You sure can!! One controller (or battery charger) will switch to float before the other near the end of charge ...

Diesel, look me up at the Swap Meet on the 14th at the All Wheel Drive Club display. Ask for Evan - el president!

I will have chargers there and can advise about solar charging as I lecture in both fields.

Thanks for your reply clanky. Re Best temp for lead acids is 20-25deg C. Once over that temp the loss of life expectancy is fairly linear to the temp increase. From memory its about 1 year for every 5 deg above 25....dont quote me on that just yet as I havent got my info here. In any case keeping ...

I have decided to install a flooded wet cell, non-maintenance free type so that I can top up the cells from time to time with demin water. By the way the voltage from the regulated charging circuit is not high as it is regulated (duh!) to 14.4-14.7vdc max although some do go as high as 15vdc. The ...

Update -

I finally got hold of the retailer and he is to be OK. The cells are Suntech brand which are better than most.

Makes me wonder now about my suppliers of solar equipment.

By the way, there is another type of solar panel called amorphous which is commonly found in calculators etc. This type of material which is made by a screeb printing process rarely exceeds 8% efficiency with most brands barely scraping 6%. I can only assume that the cheap panels mentioned in the ...

Real cheap because of this, Efficiency 16% So Chinese cheap arse solar panels. Some of the top of the line solar panels are around 90% efficiency, the poly ones cost a packet for them, the RRP are more in line with the upper middle range prices. After all there's a reason why you'll pay $30,000 for ...

I have an auxiliary battery problem – please help

G’day All, I have a 98 Jack 3.0TDi which I’m absolutely in love with except for a few niggly problems. The main one is the auxiliary battery location (left side @ firewall) which gets awfully hot. On average I go through a battery (70-80Ah sealed lead acid) every 8-12 months because of excessive und ...

Well I have a 1998 Jack 3.0DTi and it has just clocked over 204K. It is a narrow body Jack whereas the 2000-2003 ones are wide body (about 12 inches or so wider). Apart from replacing the injectors (free) and the water pump at 180k it has been brilliant. It goes shit out of a shotgun on snow ...
