As long as the terminals & clamps are all clean & the ignition is off not a problem. Slow trickle chargers will not assist in jump starting, if you cannot fit a dual battery system buy yourself a heavy duty jump start. Made up a different bracket.

I used a holden pump when I stuck a 253 in my lux

Check that the leads are in the correct position & timing is correct, the dissy may have been placed in wrong position, not hard to do, I have done it

I don't know much about that engine, is the distributor electronic or does it have points ?
