The gearbox in the four cylinders is a problem waiting to happen. The box in the V6 is the same box as behind an RD28/QD32/ZD30 and has no known issues in the Pathfinder.

Some have a Big Obvious Hook on the front of the right-hand chassis rail, get your friends to look. You can't miss it.

Same gearbox, FS5W71C, different bellhousing. You will need, engine and TD27 bellhousing at the least, but easiest if you get a fan-to-transfer case complete package with loom (starter motor on opposite side). Use a jumper lead to go from the +ve on the battery to the little solenoid control lug on the starter solenoid. If it throws the fork and starts, your key barrel is tired, or the starter relay (if fitted) is buggered.

Are you certain it's a teeth grinding noise, or could it also be the solenoid throwing back and forth really fast? Often if the resistance in the circuit from the battery to the solenoid is high (worn out relay if installed, worn key barrel terminals, etc) and the battery is not 100% healthy the ...
