when i still got em (now i'm using gen2 hubs and axle), i always set it to free when i'm not in 4wd mode. by engaging it to lock, you also force the drive shafts to unnecessary movements and introduce unnecessary wear to them. imho, i don't think its the free wheeling hubs that's making the noise ...

your suggestion is very worthwhile doing glen. i might just do that. i do remember clearly that the rear axle i got was marked v26 4m40. i did put the gear in 4wd mode and drove it on the pavement for few meters. no weird noise or the car hesitated ...

we installed the new axle today, re-check the wiring and tidying up the interior.
