G'day Dan.
I've got the same Paj as SammyBoy (83 TD SWB), and I ended up getting a non-Mitsu drop-in replacement from this mob:

Not a huge increase in power over the original (only 10-15A more), but it saved me hundreds compared to the cost of an original from Mitsubishi.

I drive the turbo version of his SWB (the 4D55T), and though I don't know whether there's any injector pump or compression difference between the 2 engines, I do know that when I was having boost problems, it was PAINFULLY slow. Great to hear that someone else out there loves their '84 TD Paj as much as I do. I don't think I could ever get rid of mine (even though the 4d55T is a tad weak)

Best advice I can give is to go with the newbie like Bitsamissin suggests. I wish I'd done that, coz I got a rebuild ...

Sorry, I've only just jumped into this topic, so I'm lagging a bit.
I dunno if this would work, but instead of mucking around with converters, would it be possible to run 2 x 12v batteries in series (to give the main 24v), and then grab 12v from the bridge between the 2 batteries ...

I had a similar experience with my old diesel Paj, 'cept my alternator was not only piss poor, but had an intermittent fault too. Spoke to heaps of Auto Elecs, but ended up buying a non-original newie from this mob:
