If I were you I would be asking previous owner if he ever replaced the big end bearings, if not then at 270km they need to be done ASAP. From what I have read they need to be done every 100km for piece of mind, not a big job, but I wouldn't be driving if it were mine till I knew the big end bearing ...

thats what i've heard too which is why i' unsure of what to do, but i have heard of gudgen pins being ticky, comments anyone ??? cheers

Is there definately no chance you have an exhaust leak? Either manifold gasket or crack somewhere? Just that the ticking noise you describe like a lifter is very different to a typical big end rattle. Did you probe your stethascope around the exhaust manifold? checked exhaust with stethascope and ...
