Re: 3L 2.8 diesel - injector pump replacement: HOW TO?

the dial tool is to time the pump to the engine you dont realy need it Hmmmm, will have to think about that one.....wonder what Mr Toyota would say? Yeah you can get away with all sorts of short cuts. If you mark the front cover and the pump flange (if they aren't already) before you take a pump off ...

Re: 3L 2.8 diesel - injector pump replacement: HOW TO?

To completely remove the pump you have no choice but to undo the fuel pipes. It is just as easy to remove them all together. There are marks on the crank, cam and injector pump pulleys that must line up with marks on the backing plate for the front cover when you put the timing belt back on. You ...

Re: 3L 2.8 diesel - injector pump replacement: HOW TO?

As the other guys have posted the difficult bits can be getting the front pulley/harmonic balance and the fuel pump pulley off. Do yourself a favour and pull the radiator out so you have more room and buy a cheap puller from the nearest auto shop. The bolt between the pump and block is best got by ...

Re: 3L engine knock

Yeah they say the same about being religous with the oil changes. I have been since I have owned the car but that has only been 12 months and who knows what happened before I bought it........ Will build it as strong as I can, service it right and hopefully it will last. Have plans to replace it ...

Re: 3L engine knock

Have had a yarn to a couple of blokes at work who have worked in automotive engine shops (we build industrial engines for a living) and know these engines pretty well. Apparently the L series engines are renowned for this failure. The Toyota bearing is aluminium which is makes it "soft". This is ...

Re: 3L engine knock

Pulled the engine - #4 big end is toast. Crank is cracked and lost its hardness. Now for a "new" crankshaft................

Well, I have resigned myself to pulling the engine and taking a look at the bottom end.

Keep you posted.

White smoke on start up is usually a sign that your engine is starting to lose a bit of compression. Once the engine warms up the pistons and rings will expand and begin to seal better. The white smoke should then disappear or maybe change to a light black. This is pretty normal as a diesel ages. If ...

Pretty sure it is not a bearing as the noise is high in the engine and half engine speed. Didn't see anything unusual on the head or pistons. Head had a couple of leaky valves so had them ground and the seats cut just for laughs. Fuel pump has been reconditioned as have the injectors But it still ...

Appreciate the ideas but this really is a scary sound. Wish I could record it and post it. After about 15 minutes running at a fast idle it gets so bad you have to turn the engine of f for fear that something will come out the side.
Let the engine cool and the whole process starts again!

Cam belt and tensioners have been changed.
Front pulley is fine.
Knock is very much at the top end of the engine.

3L engine knock

I have a 2.8 litre 3L engine in my Hilux that has been fitted with a turbo off a 2.4LTE engine. The damn thing was running just fine then it developed a light knock that sounded a lot like excessive valve clearance as it was half engine speed. This has developed to the point where I can't get out of ...

The 2.4lt turbo will pretty much bolt straight up. If you can get all of the bits off the donor engine you will be laughing. You have to move a couple of exhaust manifold studs but the holes are in the head. Biggest problem is hooking up the oil drain. The 2.4LTE turbo (CT20) is better though as it ...

My boy has a space cab Hilux and we have just picked up a complete Surf with a shanked motor. We are looking at dropping the 'lux body on the Surf chassis - shorter vehicle and coil arse end. Only problem I can see so far is that 2 of the mounts on the Surf chassis will have to be moved to match the ...

Stick with the genuine CT20. If you buy the bits off a donor engine you are going to be paying for it anyway. If it hasn't had a major then they don't cost that much to rebuuild.

The CT20 off a 2.4LTE works well. Try to get all of the bits off a donor engine - just makes it easier. The only pain in the arse can be hooking up the oil drain but there are a few solutions for that. Also, pay some attention to your cooling system. On full throttle/boost the engine will generate ...

should also mention it has very high crank case pressure. its blown out the rear main seal a few times. With the breather hooked up correctly - out of the rocker cover and into the crossover pipe between the air cleaner and the low pressure side of the turbo - then the turbo will actually be ...

The spiggot bearing on these engines is really small and has a habit of siezing. If this has happened the gearbox continues to turn even though the clutch has been "released".

Can he get it into gear without the engine running and does it grind when trying to get reverse?

Hilux/Surf Chassi

Does anyone have any drawings of a Hilux LN111R and a Surf LN130 chassis? I need to know the difference in the position of the body mounts.
