If you go the RB route, check out my wiring post in Patrol4x4 under DIY. Both V8 and RB have merit but I reckon the RB would be happening sooner and I couldnt see it costing more than 2k if ya did the work yourself. The non turbo RBs are perfectly capable of handling a fair whack of boost with just ...

what exactly are you dyno tuning, Its running factory management??? the wildest thing you could do is screw in a bit more base timing and that can be done in your driveway.
Dont get talked into wasting money.

best off test driving each. I went with the manual simply coz it went well and as Feral said the manuals are very tough. The auto cost a bloody fortune to rebuild should they need it which most do after years of lugging nearly 2.5tonnes in overdrive. The autos were never equiped with adequate ...

what they say is correct. Your current injectors are not reaching 100% duty cycle anyway so you certainly dont need bigger ones. A decent after market ecu/loom/tune will set you back 2K plus dyno time for very little gain. If you go this route youd atleast want higher comp and suitable cam to get ...

head gasket failure or cracked head. Mine had same symptoms but like you said ran fine when up to temp.
I went with a brand new head had it sorted for LPG. It wasnt cheap but a very straight forward job.
around 2grand from memory and went with a VRS gasket kit with NEW head bolts.

there is only a handful of 2.8's that make it past 200k, there are people out there that defend them but I have helped pull a few out for mates and unfortunately the probs they face are usually expensive to fix. IMO they are let down by their cooling systems which get neglected over the years. The ...

It will be interesting when all these converted hybrid ricer GU's end up on the forsale section and the folks end up going back to 4.2 diesels or big petrols. I would suggest driving one before doing the conversion, IMO the RB30 was only just barable when turboed in a GQ and useless off road. It ...

they are just as hard to get out as the manual and since most mechanics charge 1300AUS to do a clutch im guessing the clutch the kit is around 700 so that leaves 600 in labour.
I couldnt see anyone getting one out in under 3 hours, they are big and heavy and require a fair bit of accessory removal.

Id be checking your AFM it sounds like its goint into a limp mode. No need to dyno tune a TB42e, there is nothing that can be done that the computer isnt already doing, anyone that tells you otherwise is ripping you off. They are a pretty basic engine that obey some fairly basic inputs not much can ...

VG30 turbo is very similar to VL t3, I have had one and believe it is a far better and more responsive turbo however they are getting long in the tooth and I dont believe you can rebuild the CHRA or core, so ...

Personally I would stick with the genuine nissan head gasket, new bolts and have the combustion chambers relieved ever so slightly, standard comp ratio is pretty generous anyway for turbocharging. Failing that when you rebuild get the block O ringed. I have not seen too many success stories with ...

If you have never rebuilt a turbo save yourself the headache and get it done, its got to be balanced anyway so you wont be able to do it yourself anyway. The kits are 70-90$ on ebay. BTW the standard turbo was terrible on my GQ and I always thought it would be, it boosted way to low in rpm. Not a ...

I have never really payed too much attention to the petrol GU's but I have been without a patrol now for a couple of years. I do miss my TB42 shorty and also my RB30 GQ turbo. Hitachi are mitsibushi and Nissan bought Garrret so be wary if you are getting a hitachi it may not be a direct fit. Also as mentioned Hi-flow means many things, a good dyno tune is a must if fitting an unknown turbo. You really cant go wrong with a rebuilt standard unit, especially if you want ...

yep everything is interchangable, as in everything from a 3.0L GQ will bolt into a shorty. You really only need engine/box/crossmember. Your diffs will be too tall (ratio) but can live with it if turboed. I turboed my LWB rb30 and hope to do the same conversion to my SWB but the TB just wont die ...

Cooler pipes

Mild steel is fine for pipework, some of my old cars are still getting about 12 years later on the same engines, turbo/cooler combos. the turbine wheel acts like a muffler in the turbo, still without muffler will be fairly loud and only give you minimal extra grunt. If they are both 6's they will be the same heat range.
Be carefull going a colder plug they can be temperemental at idle. I went back to standard BPRES6 in my 3.0L turbo LWB and they were fine even on 12psi. Maybe close your gaps down a little.
