Re: GQ roof swap

Nah, its the gutters that are rusted out. I’m not too fussed about the structural welding because the metal is thicker at the pillars and with good gussets it should be as strong as factory if not stronger.

GQ roof swap

I recently bought a 89 GQ, the motor and mechanicals are immaculate but the body has a bit of rust especially around the roof gutter. When I bought it I intended to sand it back, clean it out and re-paint. In some places the rust has eaten through the metal while previous owners patched it up with ...

The 3.5 kills the 3.0 . (half as much power again and buckets more torque) The 3.0 is a 100Kw motor 220ish Nm of torque . The 3.5 is 140Kw (I have a 155Kw version in mine from a later model magna) with 310Nm of torque .. so you can see the 3.5 is a way gruntier motor, does not seem to haev the head ...

the problem with the 2.8's are as follows 1) Underpowered, to even turn 33's offroad you have to drive them hard at around 2000+ RPM 2) Heads, they crack heads and head gaskets quite common 3) Glow plugs, The 2.8TD uses a stupid setup for the glow plugs that causes them to screw up. 4) Timing belt ...

4.2 are the better option especially for turning 35s the 2.8 motor are basically a ticking time bomb......although some do get lucky with but they are known for unexpected problems..totally up to you though your best bet is to tack both types of cars for a test drive and see what fits you best ...

GQ Diesel options

4.2 or 2.8 Diesel? I’ve rolled my trusty old Pajero and in my search for a new truck I’ve almost made up mind on a GQ Patrol Diesel. What are the differences between the two motors? The 4.2 is from a truck and drives like a truck, but what about the 2.8s? They are heaps newer and for some reason mor ...

Also, whats the difference between the 4.2 Diesels and the 2.8s? I believe the 2.8s are underpowered (obviously) but its a much newer motor and even came with the early GUs

@Stuee – Tomorrow I’m going to talk to a few blokes at Les Richmond Auto about the TDi motors and owning, running & modifying a Defender or Discovery. Just a thought, if you were in another vehicle, would the same thing have happened? ie due to the track anyone would have rolled over as well or do yo ...

Re: crash

I totally agree with what you’re saying. I was leaning towards the GQ because of the lower price compared to Toyotas and the availability of spares, I don’t think I can afford an 80 Series and even if I buy one I’ll be scared to wreck it. With the Pajero I have quite a bit of accessories for it and a ...

Yeah the problem isn’t really scaling a hill, its dropping the wheel in a 2 foot rut while scaling a 40 degree hill. I wouldn’t mind a shorty at all because even when I tour I pack pretty light, I just don’t want to roll another truck. I rolled the Paj on a track near the Thompsons Dam. It was the ro ...

A crashing end & a new beginning

A few weeks ago my one and a half year run with my NH Pajero ended when I rolled it 7 times down to the bottom of a steep rocky climb. It was raining and dark and I shouldn’t have been doing something that hard in the wet but its a bit late to ask questions and I shouldn’t be complaining after wal ...

Aren’t flexi flares the same thing you get in Bunnings & Clarks Rubber? Bushranger makes them as well. The 65mm & 75mm flares have wire inserts which should keep it from sagging. Is there any difference in the rubber flares sold in Clarks Rubber and the expensive stuff from Bushranger? I desperately ...
