funny enough i got an exchange reco box wen mine packed it in... eventualy lost 1st gear, figured it was easier and quicker then having mine rebuilt. was sposed to have all new bearings, sincro's seals, new main shaft, modified 1st gear washers and new selector folks, i instaled it and straight away ...

possibly shot bearings in the box, or i had similar noises in my cruiser, although it was 1,2,3 and 5 but 4 was good. it turned out to be a cluster shaft in the box. the noise couldnt be heard if u had the transfer in nuetral and went through the gears, & couldnt be heard if u coasted with the ...

my 79series diesel cruiser runs 35's with standard 4.3 ratio diffs, it copes just fine although driving up a long steep hills on the highway it'l drop to 95 - 100 ks. although this doesnt realy bother me but i'd like to gear it down a litle for offroading. reduction gears for the transfer are in the ...

id bet on the starter solinoid,( u can get a new 1 from most auto eleco's) my old hilux did the same before i had the starter rebuilt, although if the soliniod has packed it in it'd probly be worth ur while having the whole starter rebuilt if money alows as the rest is probly on its last legs 2.

I don't know why anyone would even consider the HZJ if they can afford a factory turbo? 1HD-FTE is 10x the engine a 1HZ is.
Availability, if buying 2nd hand.... and sum people just dont like turbo's. but yes they have better runnig gear

i have a hzj79. i run 35 baja's as my every day cruisin tyres ( and this is my every day driver so it actualy clocks up k's... it doesnt sit in the shed for most of its life). im a tradie so it cops a fair bit and it does wot it was made to do, it works hard through the wk, and plays on the wk ends ...

i agree, the only solution would be the shut off solinoid being faulty. it must be sticking or jamed open, cause once the power is cut to the solinoid it should close and therefor cutting off the fuel supply.

had a mate have a similar problem on a surf a few yrs ago, although his got stuck in 4wd and we had to reverse the air lines to get it 2 get out of 4wd so we could get it home, his was sumtin to do with the solinoid valve from memory

probly start with extension shackels, not very expensive and not hard to do urself which will keep the price down. if u have sum skills and a oxy/welder and a few other tools make sum rock sliders, scrub bars, rear bars etc will make it look good ans save heaps of $$$, then work ur way up to the ...

stacks look good, but it depend wot sort of driving you want to do. i considered stacks for my 79 series, but after sum thought worked out that they wouldn't last very long in the bush,... i have clearance issues as it is and i would simply rip them off same as driving lights on the rear bar ...

just a follow up 4 any1 interested, ive tossed the thermo, and put on a new Viscous clutch fan, mayb wot happened to mine ( fan chopping up radiatior in deep water etc) is a common fault with these series cruiser as the new fan has about a 1 inch further back offset in it then the old original one ...

i had a manual control switch to turn it on, and i had it running from the time the engine starts to the time it turns off, street drivin was fine, but doesnt cope with hills on highways

sounds a bit like the timing is out, that would explain the lack of power, hard starting, and smokey exhaust.
