I would consider a Holley 750 carb, but a vacuum secondary, not a double-pumper.
If I were building a SBC for a 4x4, I would also look at a 4x4 cam or a light RV cam, and not get too silly with cylinder heads.
As GUTripper said - you want low-mid range torque, not all-out power.

Getting anyone to install relays or upgrade wiring here is impossible so far. Everyone I talk to says " Just chuck in a $50 HID kit and go wild! Blind yourself and at the same time, have fun blinding your fellow drivers! Then, for extra luls, install spotties and drive around the city with those and ...

R/C model airplane builders do that sort of thing all the time, using fiberglass cloth soaked in epoxy.
Gotta move fast before the epoxy dries, though.

IIRC my Koni shocks were made in Holland.
I was surprised because I would have expected Koni/ITT to have outsourced production to China like every other self-respecting manufacturer.
Koni is owned by ITT which is a US-based conglomerate.

Anyone have anything good or bad to say about Adelaide Clutch Service clutches?

According to the local Patrol guru, NGK plugs are made in Japan and last much longer. Bosch (at least the Bosch plugs sold here) are made under license and are usually of Chinese origin.
I (and by expension said guru) may be full of it.

Re: td42 tacho intermittently not working
My 1994 TD42 did the same thing. Turned out to the be crank position sensor (which runs the tach) had gone south.
How a magnet with no moving parts can stuff itself up is beyond me, but it did, I replaced it, and my tach has been ducky ever since.

Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
Are you sure? If an engine has a total final drive ratio of 1:1 (for example) and one wheel locks up, I do not see how the other wheel is going suddenly start spinning twice as fast, unless engine RPM also were to change.

Diffs would be locked together, but the individual wheels are not locked to the diffs (unless you have lockers in). yes but I think if you locked up one front wheel on an open diff in 4wd then the other front wheel will now have to spin twice as fast due to the diff action? Wouldn't it just get ...

I don't think drums are any cheaper to manufacture than discs, but I could be wrong. I was told that it was so that it is easier to selectively lock the front or rear wheels when doing steep descents. Remember, goign forwards or backwards, you do not want the leading wheel to lock up. Going forwards ...

Re: The Toyota grenade.
I imagine the reason Toyota no longer catches grief for the explosive tendencies of its early 80 series engines is because that bomb went off a long time ago, so to speak, while ZD30s are still committing suicide on a regular basis. An early 80 series dies in 2011, and the response will probably be ...

Re: Why did nissan stop making the 4.2td.
There's a lot more to a 4x4 engine than power or torque. You also need and engine that is reliable, sturdy and that will withstand abuse. In Russia, blessed with 18% or so of the world's land mass and less than 1% of the world's paved roads, old-school mechanical injected diesels are the way to go ...
