If it's just a weekend toy does it need to be legal?
The way things are now as soon as you bolt 33s on it's illegal unless engineered, regardless of suspension/diff setup. I'm not intimately familiar with Qld legalities now, but I reckon you're looking at trailer queen if you want 33s ...

Stock-ish non-turbo LC80s are still going for up around $10k... damn. Wouldn't mind a 4.2T.

Re: School me on vitaras
For a run-around $5-7K will get you a good early Grand Vitara - 5 doors (LWB) were a 2.5L V6, which was a good little motor for a relatively light car. 98-04ish.
(3dr SWB also came with a 1.6 4cyl, the EFI version of the motor in your 94 Vit. Some also got the 2L 4cyl.)

What motor/box are going in? Do you know if you're likely to have firewall or tunnel clearance issues?
I think setting it horizontal for the moment and leaving or building in some adjustment so you can tweak to suit the transfer output if you need to.

Not that familiar with Sierras, but consensus seems to be that LWB are definitely the way to go, especially for climbing.
The beauty part is that most stuff is bolt-off bolt-on, so if you're up to the work you could get the LWB chassis, a ute cab, some wide-track diffs and you've got the best bits ...

Re: The New National Code for vehicle mods.
But there's a total wheel track width increase limit too, isn't there? So unless you start getting creative with offsets and clearing chassis/suspension bits when steering hard that's still going to be restrictive?
A 50% increase seems uncharacteristically generous!

Re: The New National Code for vehicle mods.
The 275 or 265 etc is the tyre width, so 275mm = 10.8"
I think David is saying that you can go 1.5" wider, so anything up to 12.3" would be OK... annoyingly this leaves you just short of either 12.5" or 315mm.

Re: LED Light bars
To answer the second part of your question - if you already have a decent set of driving lights (pair of Lightforce 170s) then sure throw the money at an LED bar. If it was a case of one or the other I'd personally recommend some HID floods, but if you can have both that should be a good combo.

Vehicle Height :- Maximum of 125mm. This is made up of 50mm suspension, tyres 50mm (diameter) & body blocks 50mm. (Some other States are 150mm in total)
Vehicle height :- Increases over 75mm will require an LS9 (Design) & LS10 (Modification) plate fitted, this will also include a lane change ...

So being able to say 44.45 is 45 is okay but we can't say 50 is 2 inch love the way they can have two things the same but different. When I went to school 44.45 would be rounded down to 44 not up to 45. Wow I wish I worked in government lol
An inch is 24.7mm, so 2" = 49.4mm.

Re: 3VZ-E V6 SR5 1991 toyota motor stuffed - what to do?
My old 3VZe threw a rod and punched a hole in the block. Cost me over $5k to get it replaced (not something I can do myself).
Replacement was installed with a dodgy thermostat, failed within a month and the new motor blew the head.
Be careful with all the ancilliaries if you do get a replacement ...

As above, ARB make a steel winch bar, $1k+
ECB make an alloy (non-winch) I got quotes $1600 for my LWB
They were pretty much the only ones I found when looking around. I ended up with a second hand ECB one, which I am modifying to mount the winch behind (not actually using the alloy at all!)
