You are right that not everyone needs to have 18's. I set a lot of guys up with 14's in the front and 16's in the rear. These however are mostly trail rigs, not comp rigs. The valving in the airshocks is pretty dialed in and more of a final adjustment than a starting point. The biggest things you need to play with are the oil level and nitrogen pressure. Air shocks sound perfect for your application. Almost every competitor in USA is running them. They are lighter, more quickly adusted and cheaper than coilovers.
