now for a reply that may actually help.

i knew mine was farkd, because i could grabv the flange at the diff, and move it sideways, and up and down ,and all around. HEAPS of play. thats what was doing it for me. the bearings had shat emselves

i had similar problem. rear diff was on way out. ended nasty, with 5 broken teeth.

gearbox and transfer should be right. they were the same for a lot of years. if have a LN106 tranfer case on my LN61 4 runner.

in terms of the diff, i assume the 85 4runner is IFS?

i was thinking about retreads, then i rang a few places and got 4 Simex 31" Simex Centipedes (ok, they're just normal muddies, but the DO say centipedes on them, as i like to point out! :lol: ) for $600. and by my maths, rounding the 8 and carrying the 2, that equals $150 per tyre. brand spanking new too!

doesn't the swaybar just hold the axles and body on the same plane? therefore, disconnecting it won't give more travel as such, rather let the axles move more independantly in relation to the body?
