IMO you will feel the 3.9 peppier with ZF, at least if you are not very aggresive with your gear changes on manual. Just kick down and get instant power. When i changed from lt77 to TF727 on my old 3.5 I felt it as a power increase, because I used more revs and smoother full throttle accelerations ...

How about Merc, Audi and BMW passenger/luxury V8 diesels? They have massive specs. Prolly quite expensive, with electronic control and all, but so is the Duramax I believe. I would guess about half the weight of a cummins 5.9 but still more than enough torque to blow out most everything.

The R&P gearing is 2.91:1 in 4x4 and 3.44:1 in 6x6.
With the portal's 2.06:1 it makes 5.99:1 and 7.08:1 respectively.
