is that something easy enough checked and fixed i am hopeing to do myself have alright mechanic mind but have never done anything with auto box or 4wd auto box for that matter

hey guys went 4wd today got stuck as i tried getting out ( backwards and forwards) all of a sudden when i tried to get gear all i would get is a grinding noise no matter what gear i tried. let it cool down but still no drive any ideas on what could be. had to get towed out of bush and tow truck home ...
