Hi Rob, yeah I found out that the front brakes on a NL are much larger than earlier 3.5 & 3.0 V6's. So this is why Grant can't run 15" rims and Mitsu went to a 16" rim. Grant, I think it will be an offset issue as there are NL's that I know of running 16" ROH rims with BFG muds without any drama's ...

Re: Anyone on this board have a 3.5L Paj?

I am having great issues with aftermarket rims to suit. 15" dont fit due to the front brakes, and my 16x8 from my 3.0L dont fit either.... Whether I have the wrong offset maybe but I was hoping someone on here has bought aftermarkets and can help me out.... At this stage the wheels are going to be ...

Defender must-do mods

G'day Landie experts Just about decided on a Defender as my next 4WD, to replace a petrol Paj which I love but it's a bit thirsty for touring. What are some of the must-do mods for a Defender? I've lined up diff protectors, as it looks a bit vulnerable under the front, and I can't live without a ...

Whichever snorkel you get, ensure the top intake part can be rotated so when you drive through overgrown tracks you don't collect things in the intake.

Thanks Frank. So a pure centre diff wouldn't be 50/50? I expect the VC would also need to be locked or bypassed too, then? That must mean most constant 4WD vehicles have a VC as well as a C/D. I never knew that, and I know one mechanic that doesn't either, because I asked and he couldn't explain!

Well as I said I reckon that having the fron t wheels driving in 4h gives much better road holding & handling even in high traction conditions. Agreed, which is why I won't run a front locker. Arguably, there is reduced stress all round as 50% torque (or so) goes to the front. I'd like to see how ...

As Frank said, it was the t-case after all. The fact it happened downhill in netural was simply windup in the case. After all the attempts to break it I failed, but did stuff the gears up sufficiently to make a repair job infeasible, so I have a tcase from an NK in with a 3-month guarantee. Thanks ...

It's been at RG since Tuesday, and they are still investigating. They think it's transmission related, possibly the front diff or the mechanism that engages 4WD. Definitely not suspension.

More info as it happens.

All of which has been checked. The RG guys were thinking it was suspension. I played them a video I made of it. But I doubt it, as it happens when the suspension is under bugger-all load, eg driving in a circle, and not when it is under considerably more load. There's a LOT of people wanting to know ...

Now it's happening in 2WD, when braking downhill, not even very hard, and also when reversing. The noise is much quieter, but it's still there.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Glad to hear your sister is ok, TP.

I can't believe the video camera people either. I think the motivation is to sell footage to the networks.

Personally, I'd be throwing all the gear out of the Paj and backing it up ready to shift things for people. Or offering to be a ferry for the CFA.

I have posted a video clip here:

http://www.peppernet.org/downloads/paj-noise2.zip (11Mb)

if anyone has any ideas, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!

As you can see from the clip, it's pretty noisy. And it happens going downhill in neutral, which to my mind removes the transmission from consideration.

The suspension has been checked and so has the transmission.

Next step is to gather more information, then make a call.
