2.8, what can I say........ AWESOME. I've had one in the truck for 18 months and I love the engine. Even in standard tune it goes well (will light up all 4 Simex without any real trouble) and has huge amounts of low end torque. IMHO a much nicer engine than the TD5 and Tdi. I'd love to see you put ...

He did think about going tray back but didn't in the end. He wasn't sure about weight distrbution if he took all the back body off. I'd say it's pretty much spot on now.

If you're getting a Husky, that bolts feet down rather than feet forward so this sort of design will be OK as you'll be bolting to the bumper rather than the cradle.

Isuzu, sorry, I've not got any other details. Dave Ashcroft's been keeping quiet about the exact size of the gears. He's a cleaver guy and it took him quite a while to make it work.

Serg, IIRC, helical gears are quieter and should be stronger. As far as high / low overlap goes: 5th low is about ...

Serg, i can't give tooth count but I can tell you its a complete new gearset, not just low range. They started by looking for the low range they wanted (5.95 ) and working backwards.

Material is the same as DII gears, they're using the Q gear technology to help keep noise in low range down ...

Ashcroft now do an 80% reduction kit although high range has to be 1.22. There's virtually no work to do to the case either. If you go down this route he'll also sell you 4.11 r&ps for half price!

He's also putting the finishing touchs to a 40% reduction with a 1.41 high range.

Ouch!

The high performance builder over here often use 'top hat' liners to stop this happening on the big capacity/high output conversions.

Having a look at Ashcroft's site I found this:

If you are running a high performance engine it is possible to upgrade the internals of the 4HP22 to the 4HP24, please note the box will be 15mm longer due to the thicker pump assembly

So I guess its not just clutches and is effectivly an HP24 ...

Michele, can you PM me on LRE? There a couple of very simpel mods you can do to hugely increase the strength. I won't mean redesigning, it'll just mean a little more welding.

The initial design isn't bad but it could do with a bit more as it'd be a shame to bund such a smart bumper.

As above, the main weakness is the cross shaft in the centre diff. A few people over here (Ashcrofts and KAM spring to mind) do them. They're suposed to be stronger than all the 5 speeds and the ZF 4-speed auto box. Its what a guy I know uses with his Eales 4.5l V8 (300+ bhp) and has no problems.

Yep, both 200 and 300 are good engines. As has been said, the 300 has a little more power and torque than a 200 in a Defender (easy to sort that, though ). The 300s also a little more refined. If you speak to some of the big engine reconditioners over here, they reckon the 200s a bit tougher but ...
