Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I found out the bad news today. My 3 litre is buggered. no compression. Cracked cylinder. i only bought this car 15000km ago. The previous owner only serviced it at nissan for the first yr of its life then by no names after. I am gonna try with nissan but i really dont have my hopes up.

I've actually got a 2000 3 litre and never had any problems with overheating. I went to robe at easter this year on 35s and I drove hard for long sections of beach(5km at 3000rpm +) without the needle even moving.

I agree with you raptor humper i could probably get to about 60kmh if I was revving the tits off it. It sits conforatably at about 40kmh in overdrive, low range in a 1998 GU auto with the 83% reduction.

Yeah its deffiantely normal with reduction gears. Because the gears are spinning so much faster, you hear that whining noise.

I had an 85% reduction in my auto patrol and in only started to whine after about 25kmh.

I've got a set of 285 45 Scorpion Pirellies on 18 inch mags that handled awsome on the road and way better then expected in the wet. I've got a 2000 GU and really had to drive it hard in the wet to make it slide. Didnt have any hope sliding in the dry. Bought some 35 mtrs now so not using them ...

Thats true. I had hilux rims and had to machine out the centres a bit to make them fit on my GU. Was only about 1mm. Took about 10 mins to do 2 of them. Think the rear wheels fitted fitted fine from memory without any mod.

After all my effort of getting the gears installed, i am now selling the GU for a 3 litre TD auto. I get the TD tomorrow, woohoo. If i could get the 4.2 in an auto i would but they are way out of my price ...

I disconected the speedo sensor today and all is working beautifully.

The reduction is awsome, i can now crawl up hills between 1000 and 1200rpm. Down hill engine braking is so much better aswell.

I've got a 1998 GU and dont have that problem of the tank automatically filling into the main tank when i start the car. I've got a button on the dash which was standard so i can stop or start emptying the sub into the main.

About to go through this job myself, let us know what the outcome is, 'cos I got an auto box too.

Disconected the battery for a while tonight to reset the computer but that didn't help.

Next is to cut the speedo sensor line and see if that makes a differents.
I am really starting to get stuck now.

Is that heavy nut ( 450 Nm ) real hard to undo - posssible on my own??

Yeah you could undo that nut on your own but make sure you do it on the car. One person undid it by using there legs to push it while on a breaker bar.

The 4wd switch is deffiantely plugged in. Double checked it tonight.

Gonna try reset the computer tomorrow, if that doesn't work then i'll take out the speed sensor. I'll let u know how i go.

Went for another test drive today and noticed something.

In first gear low, between say 1500rpm and 2000rpm is where i get the above problem of lurchin but not until i have drove say between 20 - 50 metres.

If i speed upto say 2500rpm or more before the lurchin starts its no prob for as long as ...

Also not quite sure what you mean by cables. Mine is a 98 model GU patrol and there aren't any cables connecting the Hi/Low gear lever to the transfercase. Just the lever itself. If you mean lurching, like bunny hopping the lower gearing means you ...

Gears are finally installed after 2 days and the reduction is fantastic.

Only got one small problem.

Basically when i am in 1st gear low range, sit at about 2000rpm it lurches back and forth like when your out of fuel. Its got over half a tank in it so it deffiantely aint fuel.

I've got the rockhopper gears, not the ones from marks. Does anyone know if theres anything majorly different from installing marks compared to rock hoppers apart from the backlash eliminator?

Its a 1998 GU patrol auto. Has 150000k's on the clock. I dont think i'll need to replace bearings but wont be 100% sure till we open the case.

It is very easy just rember to take more than enough ally out of the case to clear the gears .Lastly make sure you swap the plug over on the input shaft also when you fit the low range gears you have to fit the bearing into the houseing not onto the shaft as one of the other gears covers part of ...
