Re: 2 vehicles blowing smoke after a bog hole

Check that the oil hasn't been contaminated. I've seen grooves worn in crank pulleys where the engine was left running in bog holes, which then filled the sump with muddy water, which is then pumped through the engine and wears everything in the engine, so low oil pressure and smoke.

Michael, The exact same thing used to happen to my 80" after the field day. Was mud like stuff that got in between the clutch plate and the fly wheel. I ended up pulling the gearbox out to clean it, as after nearly a year it was still doing it. Are you able to start it in gear with your foot on the ...

No the axles are not long enough, and the drivers side axle is needed to lock the diff.

It looks to be. Just undo the bolt on the end of the big hex on the end of the drivers side drive flange, rotate the axle and see if it locks up. If it is a manual diff lock, you have to remove the spindle/stub axle to remove the axle.

I dont think they can be interchanged at all. They propshafts are on the wrong sides to each other and so wont connect to the diffs, and internally they are completely different. It depends on if the transfer case is for a P38a or a classic. If it's for a classic, then the only problem might be the ...

Re: so, im thinking of buyin a defender

all TD5 have power and air, 2" lift will fit 285/75/16's easy, better then a 33, similar height slightly narrower. You shouldn't need to lift it at all to fit 33s. I know plenty of people running 255x85/16 with no lift, myself included. I have a 285x75/16 spare, and I have no problems on the couple ...

OK - its got the wide springs up front and narrow in the rear. I was probably going to move the rear hangers a bit anyway for a bit more wheelbase to fit the drivetrain in so I may as well set it up to suit the wider springs at the same time. The chassis number checked out as a 1950 model ...

Sam, If it is a 1950 80", then you will unfortunately have the narrow springs all around. These are unique to the 80" series 1, and are prone to breaking. Somewhere in 1951 they went to a wider spring on the front, and somewhere in 1953/1954 they went to the wider springs all around, which are ...

The 4.7 crown wheel is narrower than the 3.54 one, so you will need to get a spacer machined up to make up the difference in the thickness.
