Rust is probably your biggest problem in county's this age. Footwells at the firewall, and the bottom of the door frames are the most likely spots to check. Doors aren't such a problem as you can just replace them with newer ones from a defender....Cheers Chris.

I just got a new 4 bolt flange and spacer from my landy man (about $60) then took the shaft to a local driveshaft bloke to cut off the old 3 bolt yoke and weld on a new 4 bolt one. I had a new uni lying around, so the whole thing only cost about $165, and uses your own shaft.

You've got a couple of good Rover mechs close by. I use Anthony at British 4WD Imports in Hamilton Rd, Bayswater. Works from home but knows his stuff and is good value. Also there is Roverland on Dorset Rd just opposite the Arboretum. Don't know him personally but heard good things....Chris.

Red, reason for the hose on the barbs is that instead of putting in a plug, and it not draining, with clear hose you can see if theres any fluid there and pluck the hose off if necessary, while still preventing mud etc getting in....Chris.

Yeah, EGT is as you said. I did the mods as per TuffRR's write up and find that unless I have my foot flat to the floor up a v.steep hill, my EGT's don't go too high ie. much over 600deg. If its blowing lots of black smoke; back off! A pyrometer or EGT guage should only set you back a couple of ...

A high mount has the winch motor mounted above the cable drum with the drive via a spur gearbox on the side. The high mounts offer superior line speed so thats why lots of guys use them for comp work, as well they have an external brake that doesn't heat up the drum so they're ok for plasma rope ...

I tweaked my fuel pump from TuffRR's write up a while ago and its made a BIG difference. Just make sure you use a pyrometer so's you don't overdo it. Gives noticeably more poke in the mid to upper rev range!
