Hi all my 4.2td patrol gearbox is making a growling noise when revs are below 1000rpm and has been doing so for around 100k.
The vehicle has done well over 200k now.
As it is the model that has the suspicious 5th gear I have thought that I should at some stage opt for a reconditioned box.
Now to the ...

:D I have a 4.2td Gu 2000 St model and it has towed an off road caravan around the block 3 times without any mechanical problems and has now completed over 200,000 ks . It has had a Motson stage 2 upgrade that bettered its performance and this was done before 20k .
The only criticism I have is the ...

Weeeel it looks like I'm a hangin on to the old GU 4.2TD for a while yet
A modern 3.6 td crd would be good.

Lets hope Nissan don,t stuff it up with some weak part.

More than likely a dud battery.
Test the draw with everything off using a multimeter the draw should only be .1 or. 2 amps at max with the clock etc running. This can be supported for many days if the bat is up to scratch.

Will those that have had their Diesel's gassed respond with their findings on fuel consumption and power. How does the gas affect the heat situation?

Extractors assist in getting the exhaust away from the engine and are a type of exhaust manifold. They would give you a small increase in power and may improve fuel consumption marginally. Best bet is to see your diesel mrchanoc when you get the pump etc done and get him to fit a good quality turbo ...

The shut down shudder is normal. Over-run is not and is usually poor injector quality.
The low down grumble is also normal caused by the clutch springs and the thrust bearing system.
Most 4.2 Patrols do this and it is usually not a problem.
Mates one has 300grand on the clock and is still growling ...

The GU has two sensors on the bottom of the radiator one each side . One for the air con the other I am not sure about.
When the outdoor temp is up and the vehicle is working hard, towing or up long hills the temp rises so the sensor turns the air con off and when the temp cools down it will turn ...

;) On one of my vehicles I used a dolly wooden peg it worked well and if you happened on a huge bump it would fall off and the belt would work as normal , we just put the belt on as normal let it adjust then put the peg on.
If your belt is reluctant to retract clean with amourall or some such dash ...

I was under the impression that most pads had a wear indicator in the form of a groove that indicated when to replace them.
Just a thought, correct me if I'm wrong.

Our 4wd club uses the haymen and in 10yrs I have not seen a pin bend. Most of these tow bars are rated to 3.5t and bolt directly to the chasis. When the s/strap is connected it should take up the whole interior of the hitch.
Too much inertia may bend the pin but this would be in EXTREME cases only ...

Isn't it all about driving to the conditions.
If the sand is real soft then low pressures are the go.
If the sand is hard then 20 to 25 is the go.
If the sand is soft in places then 18 is the go.
At all times less than 80kph should be the go.
Just my thoughts.
