not sure if it does it on full lock to lock but there is no noise when i put the hubs from auto to the lock postion

can some one help when select 4wd hi or low on lever i get a continious clicking sound from front hubs when moving back or forward then when i get out and change hubs from auto to the lock postion there is no noise do i have a problem.and if someone could explain the purpose changing the hubs from ...

i have just brought a 92 4.2 petrol and get 4.7 ks to the litre around town and that is running bfg 245 75 16 mud tyres heading to th mavora lakes on sunday so will see how it goes on a run
