It appears I just have to be gentle....
tried the pulling back at the same time as shifting to the right into low range, and it works a treat, after 3 attempts at engaging 4L today in the dunes accross the road, it worked every time (still got friggin bogged though).

Talk me through this, do you lose ALL drive, or just front drive, when you engage low range??

I'm only losing front drive, you're fix makes sense, but only if it's losing all drive..

I have an 88 troopy, with a 4WD low range problem

When in high range, it turns all four wheels, no problems, works fine
However, when shifting to low range, it seems that power only goes to the rear wheels, and you can very faintly hear a very slight grinding sound like 2 toothed wheels just ...

With the rear lights, I can only see indicators, and no brake/tail lights, but I'm probably missing the obvious, do these bars come with lights ???
