Mate there is a bloke in gympie called killa custom cables. Does conversions and all the wiring etc. Ive got a loom for a 5ltr in a hilux and cant fault it. I think he used to be on here. He has a facebook page aswell and so might be able to clue you up on a few things

A reco engine should be no different to brand new.

No way mate. Reco's are done to a fixed price. So this means whoever is doing the reco is using as much of the original engine as possible to save costs.
Cams, valves, springs etc etc are checked for tollerance and if in spec are re-used ...

the shims are for pre load on the swivel bearings. I have rebuilt my swivel hubs 2 times in about 2 years and have just run two shims top and bottom. I am a backyard hack with no mechanical training though.

I ran a set of 33 muddys for about 60 000km on my lux. 2.8 turbo running 13pound boost. Raped the shit out of it constantly and didnt care about the driveline and never had a diff or gearbox problem so I dont think the problem is to much right foot
