I used to use a dirt bike front shock boot, just slip it over and either zip tie or you can use stainless steel c.v straps.

We raced a 2.8 ltr hilux in 06 at Vic Winch, we had the smallest tyre size and smallest engine capacity out of all the vehicles, we were also using a TABOR 9000 low mount, it was slow in comparison to the highmounts but we finished 11 out of the 12 stages without any penalties or dnf's. Just my 2cents on the use of lagging or pool noodles etc..... the stuff from race shops might ne more expensive but it's rated for the purpose of protection heads from roll bars...... I don't know about your ugly noggins, but my pretty skull is worth more than a few bucks saved by going the lagged ...
