Any chance of some photos of what you have.
I bought a filter box about four years ago for this very mod, but have not progressed it any further. Really need the bracks that is mounted on the inner guard to move it further on at the moment and time has not let me source/make one.

Black magic fans from flex-a-lite I reckon are the go. They have an overide switch for in the cabin, and a A/C relay as well. They have their own cowling and bolt into the origianl cowling mountig holes (and not through the core and fins like many others). There is a specific one made for a hilux ...
