Re: Ranger 3.2L reviews

My 3.2 auto has just returned from an easter trip towing a 20 ft van around NSW. Fuel consumption 'jumped' from 11 litres per hundred to 14 odd. That's fully loaded, bikes and kayaks on the roof, van full of crap is just shy of 2.8t and full height so a lot of windage. We set the cruise control on ...

Re: 2 real wheeling tech questions!

The 33's and the rock step was probably the biggest part of your undoing - hitting the brakes was just the icing on the cake so to speak. Hilux drivelines are pretty good (not great), but seriously, left foot braking is going to find the limits of it every time in a situation like that. You are ...

Re: 2 real wheeling tech questions!

Brakes develop a whole lot more h.p. than any engine, just in reverse. Snapping shit with one foot on the brake and one foot on the accelerator is piss easy (took me about 2 seconds to strip both diffs in a pos 100 series....). In the long run, not a good way of gaining traction - auto lockers are ...

If you're looking at that, I'd direct you to the trade tools direct Renegade range. I've bought a few gensets off them and they are all good. The 'honda powered' stuff has a honda badge but that's as deep as it goes - it's made under licence in China. We used honda Dunlite gennies for years until ...

Re: Cheap winches using rope

freespool out, winch in - no problems. Try winching backwards any more than about 8-10m and the plastic rope will melt, dropping you to the bottom of whatever you are winching down. Dyneema melts at 160 odd degrees if I remember correctly. Another vote for the aldi winch here - I'd run rope on mine ...

It'd be a recent thing. I pitted a hilux in 2005 that I put a 2" body lift in to fit a long range tank. They checked the lift out and never mentioned the tank or plated the car - just the usual body lift paperwork.

We've got a couple of the safe and sound high liners too. They work well for everyday use, but as has been alluded to, they and all the others are fairly upright for the offroad sleeping ideas. Because it is top tethered and seatbelt tethered at the base, I use a rolled up beach towel between the ...

Re: school me on second hand boats

The transom is fibreglass laid up on plywood, and the stringers are fibreglass laid up on timber. It is the wooden components of each that 'rot'. Quite often the stringers are laid up, then the floor (raw ply) screwed down then flow coated, which leaves a raw untreated face of the ply in the bilge ...

Pre purchase inspections are well worth the coin - esp in the price/size bracket you're in. Stringers and floors should also be checked for rot. Check the fibreglass hasn't had osmosis is its been in the water for any period of time etc etc.

Don't believe for a second that the navaras (d22) are any better, they just last a little longer. Plenty of cracked heads and holed pistons there too. And the 2003 upgrade was to cut an inch off the dipstick - the 2007/2008 models are getting around the magical 170 000 k.m. mark now and are crapping ...

My mate I go touring with has that model prado with similar k's. It's done cape, desert, arnhen land, kimberleys, and more. Does it easy with minimal mods. They have pretty good travel for an ifs, and are generally about the most under rated touring rig going around.

I buy bostic polyurethane construction adhesive (similar to sika 11fc) in cartons of sausage gun tubes - ends up about $7 a sausage.
I'll use either, they finish about the same.
Wouldn't have a clue about the automotive stuff, I'm a builder.

The ceres ran two motors, the first was a 2.2 perkins s2s2 ala mazda b/e2200, or ford trader, rocsta etc. That was the square headlight model that I had. The round headlight was I think a 2500. I use my little panasonic impact driver on my wheels nuts. Obviously it wouldn't last long in a workshop, but it does the business for domestic stuff. You'll be going the same setup as mine to carry that constant load - mine would be about 300 odd constant then more on top as required. The adjustable leaf is well worth it. I don't see how the front end can creak unless you've gone nuts on the torsion bars? Keep the same torsion bars and just add ...
