Which gps

Just wanting to know which gps would be easiest to use on road as well as off road. We would also like to be able to update from internet. Not looking at spending a fortune, but will look at anything reasonable. Voice commands FROM the GPS are preferable. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

arrh k, well, what do you have avalible at moment,

Pda , or laptop? do you want to take them in the car with you ?

Hand held, units like tomtom, and that, are great on road, but wont help off road.

There was a thread on here, less then a day or so ago about it all.
basicly you need a pda or laptop, run tomtom or mapmonkey for on road stuff, and ozexplorer for your off road work .

doesn't seems to be any that will do both unless you can find software.

I havn't seen much in the way of off-road track maps etc, unless you have a garmin hand held GPs unit or magellin gps units.

Other wise it's software in which you have to scan maps then set them up so it'll fit and work properly in the gps software.

I have a Navman pin570 it's a PDA gps unit has all the on-road gps software plus road maps, but navman doesn't work at all once you go off road.

Though, due to it being a win2003 pda, I have installed the tomtom road software onto it and you can use that software and you'd be able to use the other gps software as well, as it's a all-in-one gps unit.

you might want to have a good think about that as a way of going.

I'll download and try out the OziExplorer CE software and se if it works will be good if it does.

Just tried it out it's working though I would need to test it a lot more/better as it needs maps etc, and I couldn't really be stuffed trying to make up maps etc.

but seems to work can't show up sat details but shows heading and speed but no ALT.

also map point to the correct spot but otherwise without a better map can't really tell with the whole of australia map.

Won't Hema maps run under Oziexplorer? Should be easy to upload.

For those of us that have no exposure / experience with these sort of things, can any of you guys give us a basic idea of what sort of pda (specs, etc) and what else you need to put something together like this?

What are the advantages of the pda setup over something like a Gramin 276C assuming that you don't have a pda to run the software on in the first place?

PDA using ozi allows for loading own maps and having meaningful background to your breadcrumb trail.

Notice that 4WD Monthly were pumping another program recently.

Biggest prob with PDA base units is screen size and ozi doesn't talk, no goto function as such except as the crow flies.... though i haven't tried it's full functionality yet.

Garmin etc are good units, but proprietary map software and limited mapping to aviation or bluewater. I believe Magellan have a deal with HEMA.

Have loaded a couple of auslig maps to my MIG (like a PDA) with ozi and they're good for touring, automatically swapping between maps (crossed three going to Janowen Hills) but the scale sucks for tracks, upside, load park map and then go get reference points to calibrate it!

Any pda that runs a windows pocket pc or windows mobile can run Ozi explorer and other mapping software, the advantage of a pda is you get moving map and a 3.5 - 4 " screen to view maps on. Most have bluetooth and or an sdio/ cfio card slot to attach either gps cards or large sd cards to hold maps and software. A suitable pda can cost anywhere from $200 2nd hand up to over a $1000 for a top shelf unit, brands are - HP/Compaq , Asus, Toshiba, Dell, Mio , Palms can be used but there is limited software available for them. A setup can be done for approx. $300- $400 , i found my pda in the middle of the road and the other parts cost - Bletooth gps $73 off ebay, 1 Gig SD card $55 off ebay, External antenna for gps $25 off ebay. The gps came with a usb cigi adapter that charges the gps and my Ipaq, the gps batt last for 8-10 hours. I put the gps on the dash and the pda is in a windscreen mount right next to my dash, i just fitted a snorkle so i might get a gps mouse type reciever and mount it permanently on top of the snorkle from here http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/search/gps/
This will need a cable to adapt to my pda but for the price, who cares.

Do you want SatNav or a GPS? Satnav is what most people want for the burbs but not much use offroad. GPS with moving maps for offroad. If you use a laptop, carputer or PDA you can do both.

Satnav and GPS is 1 and the same thing. it's only the programs that are different.

the old navman on-road software won't go off road at all, it complains then turns it self off if you can get near a road.

TomTom software will go off road but it won't show where you have been it has a red dotted line from where you left the road side, but it's a straight line to your postion.

Some of the on-road maps do include off-road tracks ie dirt tracks but it's only the well used ones ie as per/shown in th UBD map books other wise they won't have anything.

I haven't tried out the garmin software so I don't know what it does.


There's some good PDA's around now- there 1 with a GPS unit in it and bluetooth and wi-fi the whole works, it's doesn't have the GPS software so you need to buy that to use the GPS in it.

Buy your mem cards from the shops you can end up with fake mem cards off ebay, plus they are around the same price out of the shops as per ebay anyway.

Oziexplorer program seems good though need some smaller maps to test it properly.
