weld front diff or not???
hows it just comeing to the end of finishing my project zuke and out of the blue i wanted to have power steeering aswel so bought a cheap vitara power steering set up for 120 n.z dolars and installed went on a peice of piss and it even bolted on to the 4age power steering pump i bought for $20 obviously owl be running a toyota 4age.now just wondering now that i have power steering should i put in a welded front diff ?i can pick one up for $100 or should i just leave it as is?i do a lot of soft terrain driveing around here.mud,mud and more mud any advantages?and whats the bad points of haveing a welded front?is it correct that you cant turn as sharply?by the way i have a auto locker in the rear aswel
I have auto lockers front and rear with no power steering!
When it's in 4wd it turns easy when at speed but for crawling it's VERY hard! I have 30's soon to be 31's.
I would say give it a go theres nothing to lose and you can still turn it just takes abit of effort! You get used to it after a while!

Depends on who will be driving with you and yours and theres patience.
I would never do it now the missus would never be able to drive it ( maybe I should then he he ) and she would get the shits if I had to get out all the time to unlockk and lock the hubs.
BUT when I was single I did it and loved it! Cheap and easy plus IMO having a welded diff ( or arb ) reduces the stress on parts as there is no shock loading with the locker racheting in and out, just a constant force.
I ran it for years with 31s 4.16 transfer and 4.6 diff gears and never broke. Only broke when I went to 32s and the rear arb wasnt working. Had the zook almost on its side with driving uphill on front passener wheel ( open rear ) and I blew a cv.
It is a bit inconvenient in and out locking the hubs all the time but $100 go for it if you dont like it take it out.

yes but he will have power steering so even his missus could turn it on bitumen with the mudzillas at 6psi , i know as this is the setup i have with out the 4age .
with out the p/s you'd think a bit more (and still do it ) but with p/s theres no reason not too

Will it make the car capable? Sort of.
Personally, I think welded fronts suck in mud. At low speed it won't turn and under throttle the car will want to pinball from bank to bank. I have driven a LWB with a welded front a fair bit offroad and we have quite a few cars in the club here with them.
Personally, I would get sick of it pretty quick. Yes, you can at least move the steering with P/S, but that doesn't mean the car will drive effectively.
I don't buy that there is less load on the CV's. I have blown CV's with a 1 litre in mud with a welded front. with the power of the 4age, I think you will be on borrowed time unless you are very careful with the throttle.
Also, the front 2 pinion diff doesn't weld anywhere as well as the rear. (which I am a fan of)
