Looked at my tires today, . Getting a little low on the tread. I'll most likely be moving to a rural area in the next 6 months, and will be doing a lot of K's on the blacktop.
Just want to prod your collective brains and see what would be a good all round tire would be? I want to get as many k's out of them as possible, but don't want a set that will suck completely off road (H/T or A/T) I have Desert Dueler A/T's atm, not too happy with them but they are ok.
What sort of K's could I expect to get out of MTR's, with a lot of road driving? I hear people talking about getting 60 000+ k's out of a set of tyres, the most i've ever gotten is 20ish (have always bought cheapies or retreads). So basically I want to save up and get a decent set that will last me a few years. I have a play set of ET's for big trips offroad, so not looking for anything too aggressive, just want it to wear really really really slowly
Size I'd be looking at is stock Rocky size (215 75 R15) or 28"-29"
Would like to keep the price under $250ish.
And my 4B weighs about 1500kg.

I can't believe you are considering MTRs F70 After all the crap you've given me. (Bring on the bling!)
They are a fantastic tyre in all the conditions I've had them in so far... But for heaps of road driving I would maybe look elsewhere as they are a bit aggressive and can get noisy.
I wish I had done more kms on mine to give you a good indication of the expected life from them!
They handle great on the road, fantastic on wet tar, I found them be better than people led me to expect in mud, on rocks they feel right at home and on the beach they havn't got me stuck once yet
After having rubbish tyres all your life you wouldn't know what hit you with a set of decent MTRs under you!
In the end, I don't think a M/T type tyre will ever wear really really slowly due to the voids and the often softer compounds used.
Do you still want to do some offroading with the new set? Or are you happy to use the ETs for all 4x4 outings? The best option would be to buy some H/T or A/T, but as you said, they suck if you do go offroad with them...
Maybe something like Mickey ATZ or FC-II, or even BFG A/T would fit the bill... also people have gotten good mileage from BFG M/T with adequate performance offroad.

For $150 (31x10.5r15) the Pirelli Scorpian ATs are pretty good.
Quiet, good on road, Long wearing, excellent puncture resistance and you dont need to change tyres for a dirt road picnic trip.
I think they fared well in a past 4wd monthly test too.

Mightn't have made it clear enough, but I still want these for a bit of offroad. I'll be driving on quite a few dirt roads and when it occasionally rains it gets very fun/dangerous. Also it just isn't worth throwing on the ET's if I want to go for a short play somewhere, so I still want 4x4 tyres, just not really aggressive ones. Don't mind the A/T's but they seem to suck on road, particularily in the wet, so I was wondering/hoping there'd be a hard wearing tyre somewhere in between an A/T type tread and a Simex.

When I had 31" S/Ts I was very impressed with the wear rates on bitumen. Still had 10mm of tread after 30k km worth of wear.
I had no complaints with offroad perfromance, but I'm not a rockcrawler. The 4wd Monthly A/T test didn't rate them much for bitumen handling...

I only have H/T's on my work vehicle (Dueler H/T D689 to be exact) and they handle slippery conditions ok. Take a Mine Haul Road thats still in the clay level, spray it with Dustbloc, then let it rain, it doesn't get much slipperier then that.RockyF70 wrote:Mightn't have made it clear enough, but I still want these for a bit of offroad. The only times where major understeer/oversteer has occurred, loss of traction and general sliding all over the place have occured, the ones running M/T tyres are having the exact same problems. But generally, just the added traction of having 4WD engaged is the biggest factor. This is on your typical hard packed unsealed surface you would typically find on a dirt road.

For my two cents worth, I'm running Copper ATR's. I don't know if sizes are availble for your 4B but I'm quite happy with them.
Great on road, wet or dry. Apparently the central rib running around the tyre helps with directional stability. Excellent wear, I've done 15K and they look like new. Consistant with two other guys I know with the same tyre. Not as aggressive as a full blown muddy obviously but a good compromise for me any way. In all but really wet conditions off road(non-existent in SE QLD anyway) I do OK going anywhere my mate with a highly modified Patrol and MT Claws gets to.
Good in sand and soft soil. No problems on real sharp rocks. I've read they have a habit of picking up pebbles and throwing them at following vehicles but hav'nt had problem with any of mt mates. Like all tyres using the right pressure for the track is the key.

If along the lines of this topic so far, a MTR will outperform a Cooper ATR and ST, Pirelli Scorpion, Dueler 689s etc etc in mud mainly due to the large voids.
If you compare it to a ET, Bogger or other known mud tyres, yes they aren't as good, although they are never marketed as a full mud tyre.
I've been through a fair bit of mud with mine and they absolutely crap all over my A/Ts I had on before. I find they self clean very well for a tyre crap in mud too.
I reckon Toyo open country (A/T) have been good.

My last set were coopers HT. I got 94000kms out of them. Towards the end, in the wet they were a bit dicey due to there hard compound, and they chip a bit off road. If your keen enough to change tyres for trips, I would recommend them.
Note I now have coopers ST and very very very happy with them. wearing well too. I have done 8000klms so far in them and the tread has only worn down 1-2mm. and they have a standard 14mm tread depth. so going ok at the moment.

don't buy mtr's if you want something for a lot of highway use. mate has them on his hilux and they have done 30 thou and are rooted and really noisy, he will be lucky to get 35 out of them. i ran a set of bridgestone duellers when i had my lux for a while. did a trip to the NT thru the daly river and back down the western side of the gulf and they were great as far as all terrians go.
I replaced them with a set of muddies after 45thou and they still had about 7mm of tread left and sold them for 300bucks. still good tyres just wanted some muddies
